Reflexology

Reflexology is a science that deals with the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. The uniqueness of reflexology is the proper method of using the thumb and fingers on these reflexes. The principles of reflexology embody techniques designed to keep the body’s systems operating at peak efficiency by:

• Relieving stress and tension
• Improving blood supply and promoting the unblocking of nerve impulses
• Helping nature to normalise (homeostasis)

The ancient art of reflexology, the origin which has been lost in time, is reputed to have been practised in many cultures. A fresco in the physicians tomb in Saqqara is evidence that Egyptians were practising both hand and foot methods in 2330 BC.

Most modern practitioners of reflexology in the western world owe their knowledge to the work of Eunice Ingham, a practising manual therapist who discovered Fitgerald’s work in the 1930’s and extended his ideas. On palpitation Ingham found micro crystals in nerve endings in the feet and believed that these blocked the free flow of “energy” in the zone and related organs. By dispersing the crystals with massage she maintained that toxins were released and healing facilitated. Her observations suggested that sensitive areas in the feet correlated with diseased or injured areas of the body. She mapped out the areas of the feet which affected equilibrium and disequilibrium in the body. Using special techniques which she developed, she was able to alleviate client’s pain and discomfort and promote healing.
